Foods are meant to be eaten in season. I miss the days, when my mum would come home from the supermarket, and declare that peaches were in season and proceed to slice up some big juicy peaches. The joy it would bring me is one of my fondest childhood memories.
These days, due to technological advances in genetic modification, food preservation and logistics, we are able to get any food at any time of the year. This is a great convenience to some and I DO appreciate it however, to put it simply, I like eating foods which are in season. The main reasons being;
- They often are a LOT cheaper.
- This may be all in my head but I really do think they taste a lot better.
- They force me to change my eating habits. I get to change what fruits and vegetables I am eating depending on the time of year. Variety is the spice of life!)
Which Foods are in Season?
To know which fruits and vegetables are in season, you can remember some generalities. Such as;
Orchard Fruits (apples, apricots, peaches etc.) and Berries (mulberry, strawberry) are generally Summer/Autumn Fruits
Citrus fruits on the other hands are generally Winter/Spring fruits.
Now there are many resources on the Internet that show what fruits and vegetables are in season when, but here is one i put together years ago, and have printed and stuck on my fridge. It’s based on the Australian climate however, so usage my vary!
Hope people enjoy it!
